How do I get customers to leave Etsy reviews instead of messaging me feedback?

I run an Etsy shop that’s still new, and I’m trying to build up more reviews. After orders are delivered, I send a thank-you message and politely ask for a review if they have time.

The issue is that several customers reply to my message with a short “review” in a private message instead of leaving a public Etsy review on the order. I’ve even tried including a simple visual showing where reviews go, but it doesn’t seem to help.

What’s the best way to encourage buyers to leave their feedback as an Etsy review (without violating Etsy messaging rules or annoying customers)?

Hi! This happens a lot with new Etsy shops—buyers think replying to your thank-you message is “leaving feedback.” The simplest fix is to stop inviting a reply and instead point them (very lightly) to the “Leave a review” button on their order, and when they do message you praise, ask if they’d be willing to copy/paste it as an Etsy review.

A few ways to nudge reviews without breaking Etsy rules or irritating people:

1) Change the wording so they don’t feel prompted to reply
If your message ends with a question (even a polite one), many people respond in Messages. Try a statement + gentle option instead:

  • “Thanks again for your order! If you’re happy with it, reviews on Etsy really help my small shop (they show up on the order). No pressure—just appreciate you.”

2) When they message you a “review,” convert it (nicely)
Reply once, short and friendly:

  • “Thank you so much—this made my day. If you have 10 seconds, would you mind copying that into an Etsy review on the order? It helps other shoppers find me. Totally optional!”

(That’s usually enough—don’t keep pushing after that.)

3) Don’t pair review requests with discounts, freebies, or “only if it’s 5 stars” language
It’s fine to ask for an honest review, but avoid anything that could sound like a reward/pressure for a positive rating (that can be interpreted as review manipulation/extortion).

4) Put the reminder where buyers expect it (not only in Messages)
Messages can feel like a conversation, so people “answer you.” Better places:

  • A small line on your packing slip/thank-you insert: “Reviews on Etsy help a ton (find it on your order).”
  • A photo at the end of the listing images (one simple line, not a full tutorial graphic).
  • Your order “note to buyer” (again, one sentence).

5) Timing: send fewer messages, not more
Etsy already prompts buyers to review around/after delivery. If you message immediately after delivery every time, you sometimes “steal” the moment and they just reply to you instead. Many sellers get more reviews by either (a) not messaging at all unless there’s an issue, or (b) messaging only for custom/personalized orders where you already had a conversation.

If you want, paste your current thank-you message here (remove any personal details), and I’ll rewrite it to reduce “reply-with-feedback” behavior while still encouraging Etsy reviews.
