Will changing my IP address affect my Etsy shop or trigger security checks?

Anonymous • in 4 hours • 1 answer

I run an Etsy shop and sometimes manage it from different internet connections (home, mobile hotspot, public Wi‑Fi), so my IP address changes often.

I’m worried this could look suspicious and cause extra verification, login challenges, or any account issues. Does Etsy typically flag frequent IP changes, and is there anything I should do to avoid problems when logging in from different networks?

Hi! Changing IP addresses by itself (home Wi‑Fi → hotspot → public Wi‑Fi) usually won’t “hurt” your Etsy shop, but it can trigger extra security checks because Etsy looks at overall sign-in risk (new network/location + new device/browser + cleared cookies, etc.). So you might see occasional login challenges like “we just sent you a code,” or get sign-in notification emails—especially if you’re bouncing between networks or using mobile/cellular internet where the reported location can look odd.

What you can do to avoid problems when logging in from different networks:

  • Turn on 2‑factor authentication (ideally an authenticator app) and save your backup codes somewhere safe. This makes “extra verification” smooth instead of stressful if Etsy asks for a code.
  • Try to use the same device + same browser when possible (and avoid clearing cookies right before logging in), since “new browser/new device” is a common trigger.
  • Avoid VPNs/proxies when managing your shop if you can. Those can make your sign-ins look more unusual than normal IP changes from a hotspot.
  • Be careful on public Wi‑Fi: if you must use it, don’t stay logged in longer than needed, and make sure your email account (the one tied to Etsy) is secure too.
  • Enable sign-in notifications and check sign-in history in your Etsy security settings occasionally, so you can quickly confirm it’s really you.

If you ever get a security code email or a pop-up code prompt when you weren’t trying to sign in, that’s when you should treat it as suspicious: change your Etsy password (and your email password) and review recent sign-ins.
