How can buyers download Etsy digital files on mobile when the app forces opening?

Anonymous • tomorrow • 1 answer

I sell digital downloads on Etsy (PDF files), and some buyers are saying they can’t download their purchase on a phone if the Etsy app is installed.

They try to access their purchases in a mobile browser, but it keeps redirecting them into the Etsy app. Then the app tells them to use a browser to download, which creates a loop.

What’s the current recommended way for a buyer to download Etsy digital files on a mobile device without uninstalling the app?

Answers

Hi! Etsy’s current “official” answer is still that buyers can’t download digital files in the Etsy app—they have to use Etsy.com in a mobile web browser and download from Purchases. The loop happens because the phone is forcing Etsy “universal/app links” back into the app, so the fix is to open Etsy.com in a way that prevents the Etsy app from auto-opening, without uninstalling it.

Here are the methods that work best (tell buyers to try in this order):

  1. Use a mobile browser + “desktop site” (often breaks the loop)
  • Open Safari (iPhone/iPad) or Chrome (Android).
  • Go to Etsy.com and sign in.
  • Turn on Request Desktop Website / Desktop site in the browser menu.
  • Then go to Your account → Purchases (or Purchases and reviews) → Download files.
  1. Android: turn off the Etsy app’s “open supported links” (temporary, no uninstall)
On many Android phones this is the cleanest fix:
  • Settings → Apps → Etsy → Set as default / Open by default
  • Turn off Open supported links (or remove Etsy.com from “supported web addresses”)
Then open Etsy.com in Chrome and go to Purchases → Download files. (They can turn it back on afterward.)
  1. iPhone/iPad: force it to stay in the browser
iOS is stricter about opening apps automatically, but these usually work:
  • Long-press the Etsy link (from email or the website) and choose Open in Safari / Open in New Tab (not “Open in Etsy”).
  • If it keeps jumping to the app, try Private Browsing in Safari, then sign in on Etsy.com and go to Purchases → Download files.

A couple seller-side tips (to reduce messages)

  • Add a short note in your Etsy listing description/FAQ like: “Digital downloads can’t be downloaded in the Etsy app. Please use a web browser (Safari/Chrome) and go to Your account → Purchases → Download files. If your phone opens the Etsy app, enable Desktop Site or disable ‘Open supported links’ for the Etsy app (Android).”
  • If a buyer is totally stuck and you’re comfortable doing it, you can also attach the PDF in an Etsy message (as a backup), as long as it doesn’t bypass Etsy payment and stays within Etsy’s attachment limits.

If you tell me whether your buyers are mostly on iPhone (iOS) or Android, I can give you a copy/paste message tailored to that device with the exact taps to find the setting.
