How Much Money Can You Make Selling on Etsy?

I sell physical products on Etsy and use fixed shipping rates for U.S. orders. When a customer orders from Hawaii, Etsy applies my standard U.S. shipping price, but the carrier cost is much higher than what I’m charging.
Is there a way to set a separate shipping rate for Hawaii (or exclude it from my "United States" shipping profile), or what’s the best workaround to avoid losing money on those orders?
Hi! Unfortunately, Etsy doesn’t let you break the “United States” shipping destination into sub‑regions (so you can’t exclude Hawaii or set a separate fixed price just for Hawaii inside the same shipping profile). If you want checkout to charge Hawaii buyers more automatically, the cleanest fix is to switch that listing (or profile) to calculated shipping so Etsy prices it by the buyer’s ZIP code/zone instead of using one flat U.S. rate.
If you want the best workaround options, here are the ones Etsy sellers typically use:
Option 1 (best): Use calculated shipping for U.S. orders
Option 2: Use USPS Flat Rate (when it fits)
If your items fit USPS Flat Rate packaging, your cost is usually the same to Hawaii as the mainland, which makes a fixed-price Etsy shipping profile much safer.
Option 3: Add an “Alaska/Hawaii shipping surcharge” add-on listing
Create a separate digital/physical add-on listing (e.g., “Hawaii/Alaska Shipping Upgrade”) and clearly state in:
This isn’t as seamless (buyers can miss it), but it’s a common workaround when you really need fixed rates.
Option 4: Build Hawaii cost into pricing (least ideal for conversion)
Raise your flat U.S. shipping rate (or item price) to cover worst-case Zone 8 shipments. This avoids losses, but it can make your mainland checkout price less competitive.
If you tell me what carrier you primarily use (USPS vs UPS/FedEx) and roughly how big/heavy the typical package is, I can suggest which of the options above usually works best for your exact situation.
