How do I offer multiple Etsy printable file ratios without cropping or stretching the art?

I’m creating digital download wall art printables for my Etsy shop, and I want to include the most common print size ratios (like 2:3, 3:4, 4:5, and ISO sizes). I’m worried that if I just resize one file, the artwork will get stretched or important edges will be cut off.

Do I need to design separate versions for each ratio, or is there a standard workflow to export multiple ratio files from one original (without redesigning the whole piece)? How do other Etsy sellers package these ratio options so the art prints correctly at different sizes?

Hi! You don’t want to “resize” one file into different ratios at all—because any time the aspect ratio changes, you either crop (lose edges) or add space/extend background (keep all the art). The standard workflow most Etsy printable sellers use is: create one master artwork with extra breathing room, then export separate files for each ratio using crops/artboards, not stretching.

Here’s a practical workflow that avoids stretching and keeps the important parts safe:

1) Build one “master” with a safe zone

  • Design at high resolution (300 DPI) and bigger than you need (so exports stay crisp).
  • Keep all critical elements (faces, text, focal objects) inside a center safe zone that will survive crops.
  • If your art has a background, give it extra background margin past where you think the edge will be. This is what makes multi-ratio exports easy.

2) Export each ratio by cropping (not resizing the ratio)
You’ll usually end up with separate ratio files, but they can all come from the same master—no full redesign.

  • In Photoshop/Affinity Photo: use the Crop tool set to a ratio (2:3, 3:4, 4:5, A-series), reposition the crop to protect the subject, export.
  • In Illustrator/Affinity Designer: create multiple artboards (one per ratio) and place the same artwork behind them; then export each artboard.
  • In Procreate: it’s a bit more manual—duplicate the canvas, crop to ratio, and export.
  • In Canva: you can “Resize” only if you’re okay with Canva’s layout changes; otherwise you’ll still adjust framing per ratio.

Key idea: you’re changing the frame, not warping the art. Some ratios will show slightly more/less of the edges, but the artwork won’t stretch.

3) Decide what happens when ratios don’t match
You have two clean options:

  • Crop edges slightly (most common): works best for abstract, photography, landscapes, art without tight borders.
  • Add/extend background (best for typographic or bordered designs): keep 100% of the main art, and the extra area is just background. (Avoid adding a white border unless you clearly intend a “bordered print” look.)

4) How sellers package ratios in Etsy digital downloads
Most shops do one of these:

  • One ZIP per ratio (simple for buyers):
    • “2x3 Ratio JPGs” (includes 4x6, 8x12, 12x18, 16x24, 20x30, 24x36, etc.)
    • “3x4 Ratio JPGs”
    • “4x5 Ratio JPGs”
    • “ISO (A1–A5) PDF/JPG”
  • Or one ZIP with folders inside (clean and tidy):
    • /2x3, /3x4, /4x5, /ISO-A, plus a “READ ME – Printing Guide”.

Format tip: Many sellers include high-res JPG for quick printing and a PDF version for easier “print at 100% / fit to page” workflows (especially for ISO sizes). Just make sure buyers know not to use “fit to page” if it changes sizing.

5) A couple of pro tips to prevent headaches

  • If you use borders/frames in the design, you’ll almost always need separate layout tweaks per ratio (borders make cropping obvious).
  • Do a quick test: drop your exported file into a mockup or print dialog and confirm it fills the intended size without scaling weirdness.
  • Include a short “How to Print” note telling buyers which file group to use for their frame size and to print at 100% (or select the exact size).

If you tell me what app you design in (Photoshop, Procreate, Canva, Illustrator, Affinity, etc.) and whether your art has borders or text, I can suggest the cleanest “master canvas size + export set” for your exact setup.
