How do I print USPS shipping labels for small boxes on Etsy (4x4x1)?

I sell small items on Etsy (like earrings) and I ship them in small boxes that are about 4x4x1. When I buy USPS postage through Etsy, the label prints as a 4x6, and I’ve been wrapping it around the box, but it doesn’t look very clean.

What’s the best way to handle USPS labels for boxes this small—can I print the label smaller, or should I use a different label format or packaging approach?

Hi! For Etsy USPS labels, you generally don’t want to print them “smaller” (scaled down), because the barcode has to stay a scannable size—so the cleanest fix is usually changing how you apply the 4×6 label, or slightly changing your outer packaging so you have a proper flat area for it.

Here are the best options Etsy sellers use for 4×4×1 boxes:

  1. Put the small box inside a larger mailer (cleanest + most USPS-friendly)
A 4×4×1 box doesn’t give you a flat 4×6 face, and it can also be close to (or under) USPS “minimum size” expectations depending on how it’s processed. The easiest workaround is:
  • Place your jewelry box inside a 6×9 (or similar) bubble mailer or rigid mailer
  • Stick your normal 4×6 Etsy shipping label flat on the mailer

This looks professional, scans well, and usually reduces the risk of USPS handling issues vs. a tiny labeled box.

  1. Keep the box, but don’t wrap the barcode around edges
If you want to ship just the box, avoid folding/wrapping the label so the barcode bends around corners. Instead:
  • Print the label normally
  • Trim the white space around it (don’t trim into the barcode or tracking area)
  • Mount it so the barcode stays on one flat face (even if other parts of the label extend slightly), then secure with a clear label pouch or smooth clear tape (no wrinkles)

If the barcode curves over an edge, that’s when you tend to see scan problems and it looks messy.

  1. Use the “Letter size” label print and cut it out (if you don’t use 4×6 label stock)
If you’re printing on regular paper, set your Etsy label to print on 8.5×11 (Letter), then cut out the label and tape/pouch it onto your mailer/box. The key is printing at Actual size / 100% (not “fit to page”), so nothing gets shrunk.

Quick recommendation: If you want it to look clean with minimal fuss, ship the 4×4×1 box inside a 6×9 bubble mailer and stick the 4×6 label on the mailer. If you tell me whether you’re shipping as USPS Ground Advantage vs Priority, and whether you’re using a thermal label printer or a normal printer, I can suggest the simplest setup for your exact workflow.
