How does Etsy handle shipping charges and label costs in seller payouts?

I’m returning to selling on Etsy after a few years away, and I’m confused about how shipping money shows up in the payout.

On a recent order, the buyer paid one amount for shipping, and I purchased an Etsy shipping label for a slightly lower amount. When I look at the order totals, fees, and net earnings, I can’t tell where the shipping payment is being counted, and it looks like it never gets added in.

How are shipping charges applied to an order total and payout now, and where should I look to confirm whether the buyer’s shipping payment was included (and how it’s offset by label costs and fees)?

Hi! On Etsy, the buyer’s shipping charge is included in what you’re paid for the order (it’s part of the order total that hits your Payment account), and then it’s “used up” by (1) Etsy fees that are also charged on shipping, and (2) the separate debit when you buy an Etsy shipping label—so it can feel like the shipping money never got added, even though it did.

What’s happening in the background

  • Buyer pays: item price + shipping you charged (+ tax, if applicable).
  • Etsy credits your Payment account for the sale: you’ll typically see a sale/order credit that includes the shipping amount you charged.
  • Etsy then deducts:
    • Transaction + payment processing fees (and yes, Etsy’s fee basics are that these fees apply to the item and the shipping you charge).
    • Shipping label cost as its own line item when you purchase the label (a separate negative entry).
    • Any other items like listing fees, ads, etc., depending on your shop.

Where to look to confirm the buyer’s shipping was included

  1. Shop Manager → Finances → Payment account
This is the best “ledger” view. You should see:

    • A credit for the order (the money coming in, which includes the shipping charge you collected)
    • fee line items for that order
    • A separate debit for the Etsy shipping label purchase (often shown as a shipping label transaction you can match back to the order)
  2. Open the specific order and view the earnings breakdown (Order total vs. fees vs. net)
On the order’s breakdown, look for:

    • Order total / amount paid by buyer (this is where your shipping charge is included)
    • Fees (which reduce your net)
    • Shipping label cost (if purchased on Etsy, it’s included in the order earnings-style breakdown, but it still behaves like a separate deduction in your Payment account)

A couple common “gotchas” that make the numbers look off

  • Sales tax/VAT: In many cases Etsy collects and remits tax. That tax can show in the order total the buyer paid, but it’s not paid out to you as earnings.
  • Timing: If you bought the shipping label right away, you may see the label debit immediately, while the sale funds may not be “available for deposit” yet (depending on your deposit schedule/any reserve), which can make it look like shipping came out but didn’t come in.

If you tell me what screen you’re looking at (Orders page net, Payment account recent activity, or the monthly statement view) and what line items you see, I can help you interpret that exact layout.
