Should I message Etsy buyers a month later to ask for a review?

Anonymous • in 14 hours • 1 answer

I run a newer Etsy shop and I’ve only had one order so far. The order was delivered about a month ago, and I never followed up because I wasn’t sure what was appropriate to say.

Is it acceptable to send the buyer a message now to thank them and ask if they’d be willing to leave a review? If it is, what’s a polite way to word it without sounding pushy, and should I avoid offering extra discounts or gifts in exchange for a review?

Hi! Yes, it’s generally acceptable to send one friendly follow-up message a month after delivery, but I’d keep it very light and “service-first” (make sure everything arrived/they’re happy) rather than a straight “please leave me a review” ask. Etsy already prompts buyers to review, so an extra nudge can sometimes annoy people—one message is plenty, and if they don’t respond, I wouldn’t follow up again.

A simple, not-pushy message you can copy/paste:
“Hi [Name], I just wanted to say thank you again for your order! I saw it was delivered a little while ago and wanted to check that everything arrived safely and you’re happy with it. If you have any questions or anything isn’t quite right, please tell me and I’ll help. And if you have a moment, an Etsy review would mean a lot to my new shop—but no pressure at all. Thanks again!”

On discounts/gifts: definitely avoid offering anything in exchange for a review (especially a positive review). Etsy considers that review manipulation/extortion. If you want to do a coupon, keep it clearly separate—e.g., a general “thank you” coupon for a future purchase that isn’t tied to leaving a review, and don’t mention it as a condition.

One more tip: going forward, you can put a quick “thank you + reviews appreciated” line in your shop’s post-purchase “Message to buyers” and/or include a small thank-you card in the package, which tends to feel less intrusive than an Etsy message.
