What should I do if an Etsy buyer ignores messages and leaves a 1-star review?

I sell handmade items on Etsy and had a customer message my shop with a question. I replied with the information they needed, but it seems like they didn’t read my response and then left a 1-star review anyway.

Is it worth reaching back out to try to resolve it and request a review update, or should I respond publicly to the review and move on? What’s the best way to handle this without making things worse?

Hi! Yes, it’s usually worth reaching out one more time first—but keep it low-pressure and solution-focused. The big thing to know is: if you post a public response to the 1‑star review, Etsy treats the review as “locked,” meaning the buyer typically can’t edit their rating/text afterward (even if you delete your response). So if there’s any chance you can turn it around, message first and hold off on replying publicly.

Here’s a simple approach that usually works without making things worse:

  1. Message the buyer once (maybe twice max), politely
Keep it short, assume they missed your earlier reply, and offer a clear next step. Don’t guilt them, don’t argue, and don’t ask outright for a 5-star review.

You can send something like:
“Hi [Name]—I’m so sorry you were disappointed. I replied earlier with details, but I’m not sure it came through on your end. I’d love to make this right—would you prefer (A) a replacement, (B) a return/refund, or (C) help troubleshooting? If you tell me what specifically was off, I’ll take care of it.”

If they respond and you resolve it, you can add (lightly) at the end:
“If you feel the issue is resolved, you may be able to update your Etsy review—totally up to you.”

  1. Wait a bit, then decide whether to respond publicly
If they ignore you again after you’ve made a genuine attempt (and you’ve already provided good customer service), then a public response can be helpful—but write it for future shoppers, not for the buyer.

A good public response is:

  • calm + professional
  • brief (2–4 sentences)
  • no defensiveness, no “they didn’t read”
  • no private info (order details, dates, screenshots, etc.)
  • invites them to message so you can fix it

Example public response:
“I’m sorry you were unhappy with your order. I did message you with the information you asked for, and I’m always happy to help resolve any issues—please reach out via Etsy Messages so I can make this right.”

  1. Only report the review if it clearly violates Etsy policy
If the review includes things like threats/extortion, hate/harassment, or personal info, report it. But if it’s just “1 star / unhappy,” Etsy usually won’t remove it.

If you tell me what the review actually says (just the text—no names or order details), I can help you word the best next message and, if needed, a public response that won’t escalate things.
