What should I do on Etsy if a “lost” package is delivered after I sent a replacement?

I sell physical items on Etsy and a customer reported their order hadn’t arrived. Tracking looked stuck in transit, and the carrier said it was likely lost, so I shipped a tracked replacement.

A couple days later, the original package was also delivered, so the buyer now has two of the same item. The buyer left a positive review but hasn’t messaged me about receiving the original.

Should I reach out to the buyer about the duplicate delivery, and if so, is it reasonable to ask for a return or repayment for the extra item?

Hi! Yes, I’d reach out—keep it friendly and low-pressure—but in most cases it’s not a great idea to demand repayment, and asking for a return is only reasonable if you make it completely hassle-free for the buyer (prepaid label, no deadlines/pressure, and they’re not out any time or money).

A good approach on Etsy is:

  • Message them politely: let them know you see both packages show delivered and you just wanted to confirm they received everything and thank them for their patience (and for the review).
  • Offer options, not an invoice: if they did receive two, ask what they’d prefer:
    1. Keep the extra (as a goodwill gesture), or
    2. Return the extra with a prepaid return label, or
    3. Pay for the second item only if they want to (some buyers will offer).

What I wouldn’t do:

  • Don’t pressure them or imply they did something wrong. From the buyer’s perspective, they reported a missing package and you solved it—so the duplicate is usually treated as the cost of doing business with shipping issues.
  • Don’t send a payment request out of the blue or try to “collect” through a case/dispute. Etsy’s case system is for when an order isn’t received/damaged, not for charging after the fact.

If you do want the item back, make it easy:

  • Tell them you can email a prepaid label (or mail one), and they can drop it off whenever convenient.
  • If the item is low-cost to make/ship, it’s often better (and cheaper long-term) to let them keep it and move on—especially since you already got a positive review.

If you want, tell me what you sell and the rough cost of the item + shipping, and I’ll suggest the most practical wording (and whether a return is even worth it).
