Why does Etsy show “payment not complete” when the buyer says it’s confirmed?

I just got my first Etsy order, but I’m confused about the payment status. The buyer says their checkout shows the payment went through and the order is confirmed, but in my Shop Manager the order still shows “payment not complete.”

I sell a print-on-demand book, so I won’t be shipping it myself, and I’m not sure if that affects anything.

Do I need to take any action, or should I wait until Etsy marks the payment as complete before the order can be produced?

Hi! Congrats on your first order—if your Shop Manager says “payment not complete”, treat the order as not paid yet, even if the buyer thinks it’s confirmed. That status usually means Etsy is still processing/reviewing the payment, and the order can still end up being canceled by Etsy if the payment doesn’t fully clear, so you should wait to send it to production until Etsy marks it as paid/complete.

A few quick things you can do (without taking on risk):

  • Don’t produce/fulfill yet. Hold the POD order in draft/unsubmitted status until the Etsy order shows as paid (or moves out of “payment not complete/processing”).
  • Check your Etsy messages/email from Etsy about the sale. Etsy sometimes sends a note saying they’re still processing the order and to wait.
  • Message the buyer gently: ask them to look for an email from Etsy saying the payment is still processing, and to double-check their payment method/bank verification (sometimes it needs an extra authorization step). If it doesn’t clear after a bit, they may need to retry checkout or contact Etsy Support from their account.

Your print-on-demand setup doesn’t cause this by itself—this is almost always on the payment processing side. Once Etsy shows the payment as complete, then you can safely release it to your POD provider and continue like normal.
