How can I charge higher Etsy shipping rates for Hawaii and Alaska?

I sell physical products on Etsy and I use shipping profiles with one rate for U.S. orders. When I get an order going to Hawaii, Etsy applies my normal U.S. shipping price, but the carrier cost to ship there is much higher, so I end up losing money.

Is there a way in Etsy shipping settings to set a separate rate for Hawaii (and Alaska), or to exclude those destinations from my U.S. shipping profile so I can price shipping correctly?

Hi! Unfortunately, Etsy doesn’t let you set separate domestic shipping rates by state—so you can’t make a “United States (lower 48)” rate and a different rate just for Hawaii/Alaska, and you also can’t exclude AK/HI while still offering shipping to the rest of the U.S. in the same shipping profile.

What you can do instead (practical options):

  1. Switch that profile to Calculated Shipping (best fix if it works for your items)
If you’re in the U.S. and your packages are a fairly standard size/weight, calculated shipping is usually the cleanest solution because Etsy will quote buyers based on their address (including AK/HI).
  • Make sure your package details (weight + dimensions) are accurate in the listing/shipping profile (and use a package preset if you have one).
  • If you currently use a flat rate because of multi-item orders, test how calculated shipping behaves with your typical cart sizes.
  1. Build AK/HI cost into your pricing, then keep a “simple” U.S. rate
If calculated shipping isn’t a good fit, a lot of sellers choose one of these:
  • Raise your item price slightly and keep a flat U.S. shipping price that won’t hurt you on AK/HI (the “price for the farthest buyer” approach).
  • Offer “free shipping” but increase item price enough to cover worst-case domestic shipping (still the same idea—just presented differently).
  1. Use a “shipping surcharge” workaround (not perfect, but common)
Some shops create a separate add-on/surcharge listing for Alaska/Hawaii and put a note in the description and auto-message like: “If you’re in AK/HI, please add the shipping upgrade item.”
Just know: Etsy won’t automatically force the buyer to add it, so you may still occasionally need to message the buyer and either:
  • Ask them to purchase the surcharge, or
  • Cancel and have them repurchase with the correct setup.

If you tell me (a) whether you’re using USPS/Etsy labels, (b) your average package weight/dimensions, and (c) whether buyers often buy multiples, I can suggest which of the three options will be the least painful for your shop.
