How do I format Etsy digital art downloads for multiple print ratios without cropping?

I sell printable digital artwork on Etsy and want to offer files that fit the most common print ratios and sizes. I’m worried that if I just resize one file, the edges will get cropped or the image will look stretched.

When sellers include multiple files for different ratios, are they creating separate layouts for each ratio, or is there a standard way to prepare one design so it works across sizes without redesigning the art?

Hi! To avoid cropping or stretching in your Etsy digital downloads, you generally do create separate exports (and sometimes slightly different layouts) for each print ratio—there isn’t a magic “one file fits all ratios” method unless your art has lots of empty margin or a flexible background that can be extended.

What most successful printable sellers do is design once, then prepare a few ratio versions of the same piece:

  • Keep a “master” file (PSD/AI/Procreate) at high resolution.
  • Put your artwork on a separate layer from the background.
  • For each ratio, make a copy of the master and adjust the canvas to that ratio, then do minimal repositioning (move the art slightly, scale a touch, or add a bit more background/border) so nothing important gets cut off.

The standard “no-crop” approach (safe margins)

If you build your design with a safe area, you can reuse it across ratios with very little effort:

  • Keep all important elements (faces, text, focal details) well away from the edges.
  • Use backgrounds that can be expanded (solid colors, gradients, texture, pattern) so you can widen/tall the canvas for other ratios without stretching the main art.
  • If the design is edge-to-edge (full bleed) and detailed to the edge, you’ll almost always need different layouts.

Common ratio sets to include

Most Etsy printable wall art bundles cover a handful of ratios rather than every single size. Typical sets are:

  • 2:3 (popular for many “standard” prints)
  • 3:4
  • 4:5
  • 5:7
  • 11:14 (or sometimes treated as its own file)
  • ISO A-series (A4/A3/A2/A1) for international buyers

You don’t need to list every size as a unique file—just provide one high-res file per ratio, and buyers can print multiple sizes within that same ratio.

How to export without stretching

For each ratio version:

  1. Change canvas size to the target ratio (don’t “resize image” in a way that distorts).
  2. Reposition/scale proportionally as needed (hold proportions so nothing stretches).
  3. If you need extra space, extend the background (not the artwork) or add a small border/mat.
  4. Export as high-quality JPG (most common for printing) and/or PDF (some buyers prefer it). Keep everything at print resolution.

A simple workflow that saves time

If you want the least redesign possible, make your Etsy listing artwork in a “most flexible” format first (with breathing room), then create the other ratios by extending background and nudging placement. It usually turns into a quick batch process once you have templates.

If you tell me what kind of art you sell (text-based quotes vs. illustrations/photos, and whether it’s full-bleed or has borders), I can recommend the best “master ratio” to start from and which 3–5 file ratios will cover the vast majority of your buyers.
