How do I handle Etsy digital download buyers who say they never received the email?

I sell digital downloads on Etsy and I keep getting messages from buyers saying they didn’t receive the download email. In many cases it seems like they checked out as a guest or aren’t signed into the same account they used to purchase.

Right now I reply with a saved message that explains how to find and download digital files on Etsy, but it still creates confusion and extra support work.

What’s the best way to help guest checkout buyers access their files, and are there any steps I can take to reduce these “no email received” messages in the first place?

Hi! This is super common with Etsy digital downloads—most of the time the buyer did get access, but they’re looking in the wrong place (wrong Etsy account, guest checkout, or they’re trying in the Etsy app). The cleanest fix is to give guest buyers a short “do this in 2 minutes” path: find the Etsy receipt email and use the “View your order” button, then download from a web browser (not the app).

Here’s the fastest troubleshooting flow I’d use (and paste as your new saved reply).

What to tell guest checkout buyers (copy/paste friendly)

  1. Search your email inbox for Etsy’s receipt (try “Etsy”, your item name, or “order”). Also check Spam/Junk/Promotions.
  2. Open the receipt email and click “View your order” (or similar). That takes you to the order page where the Download files option lives.
  3. Use a web browser (Chrome/Safari/Firefox) on desktop or mobile browser—downloads often don’t work inside the Etsy app.
  4. If they do have an Etsy account, make sure they’re signed into the same email/account used at checkout (PayPal buyers especially may have used a different email).
  5. If they checked out as a guest but want it in their Etsy account, they can claim/connect the guest order to an Etsy account from the order/receipt flow so it shows under Purchases & reviews.

If they reply “I don’t see the email,” I’d follow up with one question that doesn’t require personal details:

  • “Can you confirm whether you checked out as a guest, and whether you’re trying to download on the Etsy app or in a web browser?”

How to reduce “no email received” messages (prevention)

  • Add a 1-image instruction slide to your listing photos (this helps more than long descriptions). Something like:
    • “Instant Download • Etsy sends a receipt email • Download from a web browser • Etsy app may not show download buttons”
  • Put the same mini-instructions at the very top of your description (first 2–3 lines), not buried lower.
  • Use your “Message to buyers” / order message for digital items to repeat the key points automatically after purchase (keep it short + bulleted).
  • Mention the Etsy app limitation plainly (“If you’re on the Etsy app and don’t see downloads, open Etsy in your phone’s browser or use a computer.”)
  • Add a quick FAQ line: “Guest checkout downloads are delivered via Etsy receipt email.”

One extra tip that cuts down back-and-forth: when a buyer messages you, reply with two options only (Guest vs. Signed-in), so they can self-identify quickly instead of reading a wall of text. If you want, paste your current saved message here and I’ll tighten it into a shorter, clearer version that gets fewer follow-up questions.
