How do I print USPS shipping labels for small Etsy packages (like 4x4x1 boxes)?

I sell small items on Etsy (like earrings), and I ship them in small boxes around 4x4x1. My USPS shipping labels print as 4x6, and I’ve been wrapping the label around the box, but it doesn’t look very clean.

What’s the best way to handle USPS labels on small packages—can I print a smaller label size that still scans correctly, or should I switch to a different packaging setup?

Hi! For USPS packages, you really don’t want to wrap or fold the label around the edges of a tiny box—USPS wants the whole label (especially the barcode) to sit flat on one side so it scans reliably. And with Etsy shipping labels, you generally can’t safely “print smaller” without risking scan/read issues (shrinking/cropping can mess with barcode size and required spacing).

The cleanest fixes are packaging-related:

  • Switch to a slightly larger box so a full 4x6 label fits flat (common upgrade for 4x4x1 is something like a 6x4x2 style box).
  • Use a padded mailer or small bubble mailer and put your 4x4x1 jewelry box inside it. Then the Etsy/USPS 4x6 label lays perfectly flat on the mailer, looks neat, and scans well.
  • If you love the tiny box look, you can still keep it for presentation—just treat it as the “inner” package and ship it inside an outer mailer/box.

A couple of quick “looks clean” tips:

  • Use 4x6 self-adhesive labels (thermal labels or peel-and-stick sheets) so you’re not taping paper labels on.
  • If you must tape a paper label, try to avoid covering the barcode and keep everything totally smooth (no wrinkles/bubbles).

If you tell me whether you’re currently printing on a thermal label printer (Rollo/DYMO/etc.) or on regular letter paper, I can suggest the simplest setup to make your Etsy label printing faster and cleaner.
