Should my Etsy listing thumbnail show one color or all color options?

I sell an item that comes in multiple color options on Etsy. One photo shows the product details really clearly, but it only shows a single color, while a group photo shows all the available colors but doesn’t highlight the details as well.

For the main listing thumbnail, is it usually better to lead with the clearest single-color photo or the group photo that shows the full color range, and why?

Hi! In most cases, you’ll get better clicks (and fewer “what is this?” scroll-backs) if your Etsy listing thumbnail is the clearest, most readable hero photo—even if it shows just one color—then use your second photo to show the full color lineup. The main thumbnail’s job is to stop the scroll and instantly communicate what the product is; the color range matters, but it usually converts better once shoppers are already interested and swiping.

A good rule of thumb:

  • Use the single-color, detail-clear photo as the main thumbnail when the product’s features/shape/texture are what make people buy (and when the group shot looks busy or smaller).
  • Use the group color photo as the main thumbnail only if the variety itself is the main selling point (e.g., “pick your color” is the hook) and the group image is still super crisp at small size.

A practical way to combine both without sacrificing clarity: pick your best-selling / most eye-catching color for the first photo (brightest, highest contrast, most “giftable”), and make sure your second image is a clean color chart or lineup with labels. Also, in your first 1–2 lines of the description (and a photo overlay if you use them), make it obvious that multiple colors are available so shoppers don’t assume the one in the thumbnail is the only option.

If you want, tell me what the product is (e.g., scrunchies, tumblers, phone cases) and whether your traffic is mostly from Etsy search or Etsy Ads, and I’ll suggest which style tends to win for that kind of item.
