Should I use Etsy vacation mode if I’m promoting my shop but traveling next week?

I sell handmade items on Etsy as a hobby, and I’m planning to promote my shop at an in-person event next month. The problem is I’ll be out of town for about a week starting the day after the event, and I won’t be able to make or ship orders during that time.

My current processing/shipping timeline is around 5–7 days, but I’d need to extend it temporarily to avoid late shipments. What’s the best way to handle this on Etsy—turn on vacation mode, temporarily increase processing times, or avoid promoting my shop until I’m available again?

Hi! If you’re actively promoting your Etsy shop at an event, I’d keep your shop open but temporarily extend your processing time to cover the week you’ll be away—that way any orders placed right after the event get accurate “ship by” dates and you’re not set up to ship late.

Here’s the cleanest way to handle it:

  • Before the event: Update your processing profile(s) so your processing time stretches past your return date (add a little buffer, too). This updates all the Etsy listings using that profile, and buyers will see later estimated delivery/ship-by expectations at checkout.
  • During your travel week: If you truly can’t do any order prep or message customers much, you can still flip on Vacation Mode right when you leave to prevent new orders while you’re gone. (Just note: Vacation Mode makes your shop harder to find in search and people generally need your exact shop name to locate it—so it’s not ideal while you’re trying to ride the momentum from the event.)
  • At the event: Tell people plainly: “Orders placed this week ship starting [your return week].” Most confusion comes from shoppers not noticing dates, so it helps to say it out loud and also put it in your shop announcement/auto-reply.

If you want the simplest, lowest-stress option: increase processing times now, promote at the event, and only use Vacation Mode if you decide you don’t want any new orders while you’re away (or you’re worried you’ll get overwhelmed).
