What should I do on Etsy if a replacement order arrives and the original is delivered later?

I sell physical items on Etsy and a customer reported their package never arrived. The tracking looked stuck in transit, so I sent a replacement with tracking to make sure they received their order.

A couple of days later, the original shipment updated to delivered as well. Now it looks like the buyer may have received both packages, and they haven’t messaged me about the duplicate (they did leave a positive review).

Should I reach out to the customer about the duplicate delivery, and if so, is it reasonable to ask them to return the extra item or pay for it?

Hi! Yes, I’d message them—keep it light and assume good intent—but I wouldn’t demand they pay for the extra or make returning it a condition. A friendly note that “both packages now show delivered” and you just want to confirm they didn’t get doubled up is the safest, most professional move.

If they confirm they received two, it’s totally reasonable to offer options, like:

  • You email them a prepaid return label (so it’s no hassle/cost to them) and they drop the extra back in the mail, or
  • They keep it as a courtesy/“sorry about the postal delay,” especially if the item is low-cost and you’d rather protect the customer experience.

If you do want the extra item back, I’d phrase it as an ask, not a bill: “If you did receive a duplicate, I’m happy to send a prepaid return label so you can return the extra one.” On Etsy, you can buy a return shipping label (US sellers) to make that easy.

What I wouldn’t do: send an invoice, pressure them to pay, or imply they did something wrong. Since you chose to send a replacement proactively (which was good customer service), the cleanest path is either (1) prepaid return, or (2) let them keep it—whichever makes more sense for your margins and the type of product.
