Why am I not getting Etsy message notifications on my phone sometimes?

I run an Etsy shop and rely on the app to alert me when customers send messages. Lately, I’ll occasionally find a new message hours later even though I didn’t get any push notification.

My Etsy notification settings are turned on, and I haven’t knowingly changed anything. What are the most common reasons Etsy message notifications don’t come through consistently, and what should I check to fix it?

Hi! If your Etsy notification settings are on but message push alerts still show up late or not at all, it’s almost always something on the phone side (battery/background restrictions, Focus/Do Not Disturb, or OS notification permissions) or the app getting “put to sleep,” so the notification only appears when you open Etsy later.

Here are the most common causes and what to check, in the order I’d troubleshoot:

1) Phone-level notification permissions (they can be “on” but limited)

  • iPhone: Settings → Notifications → Etsy → make sure Allow Notifications is on, and check that Lock Screen / Notification Center / Banners are enabled the way you expect. Also check Notification Delivery isn’t set to a “scheduled summary” style for Etsy.
  • Android: Settings → Notifications → App notifications → Etsy → ensure notifications are allowed. Then open Etsy’s notification categories (often called Notification categories / Channels) and confirm Messages/Conversations is enabled (sometimes a specific channel gets toggled off while the app still shows “notifications on”).

2) Focus / Do Not Disturb / Sleep modes
Even if you “didn’t change anything,” Focus/Do Not Disturb can get enabled by schedules (sleep, work, driving).

  • Check whether Etsy is allowed during Focus/Do Not Disturb, or if notifications are being silenced until you unlock the phone.

3) Battery optimization / background restrictions (biggest culprit for delayed pushes)
When your phone is trying to save battery, it may pause background activity so Etsy can’t reliably receive pushes.

  • Android: Look for Battery → Battery optimization (or “App battery management”) → set Etsy to Unrestricted / Not optimized. Also allow Background data for Etsy and disable any “sleeping apps” feature for Etsy.
  • iPhone: Low Power Mode can delay background activity. If you’re frequently in Low Power Mode, try turning it off for a day and see if message notifications improve.

4) App is out of date, or the install is “glitchy”

  • Update the Etsy Seller app (or regular Etsy app, depending on what you use) and your phone OS.
  • If it’s still flaky: log out of the app → restart phone → log back in.
  • Last resort: delete and reinstall the Etsy app (this often fixes stuck notification tokens).

5) You’re signed in on multiple devices (or notifications are going somewhere else)
If you have Etsy on a tablet/old phone, or you’re switching between the Etsy app and Etsy Seller app, notifications can behave inconsistently.

  • Make sure you’re logged into the same account on the device you expect.
  • Check whether another device is receiving the notifications instead.

6) Network/VPN issues
Push notifications rely on stable connectivity.

  • If you’re often on spotty Wi‑Fi, try turning Wi‑Fi off and testing on cellular for a bit (or vice versa).
  • If you use a VPN or strict firewall/“private DNS” type setting, try disabling it temporarily to test.

7) Etsy message filtering/labels confusion
Sometimes sellers “find a message” later because it landed somewhere unexpected (for example, a different inbox tab/filter).

  • Double-check you’re looking at the same place each time (especially if you use both Etsy and Etsy Seller apps), and that you don’t have inbox filters hiding unread messages.

If you tell me whether you’re on iPhone or Android (and whether you use Etsy vs Etsy Seller app), I can give you the exact menu path for the background/battery and notification-channel settings that most often break message alerts.
