Why can’t I select just “dangle earrings” when creating an Etsy listing in the app?

I’m listing handmade earrings on Etsy using the mobile app. When I choose the “dangle earrings” option, it forces me into additional subcategories that don’t fit my design, and I can’t leave it at just “dangle earrings.”

Is this a limitation of the Etsy app or the category structure, and what’s the best way to list them correctly if none of the subcategory options match?

Hi! That’s not really an “Etsy app limitation” so much as Etsy’s category structure (their taxonomy) showing you the next required level for that path. In some categories, Etsy won’t let you stop at “Dangle & Drop Earrings” because they’ve decided the next “style” step is mandatory—so the app keeps pushing you into subcategory/attributes even if they don’t match your design.

If none of the forced options fit, the best way to list them correctly is:

  • Back up and choose a different category path that fits better, even if it’s a little more general (still under Earrings). The “right” category is the one that describes what the item is without forcing you into an incorrect cultural/style bucket.
  • Pick the closest available option when you must, then use your title, photos, and Etsy tags to be precise (e.g., “handmade dangle earrings,” “drop earrings,” “wire earrings,” “charm earrings,” “minimalist,” materials, length, etc.). Buyers find you mostly through search, and Etsy relies heavily on those keywords and attributes.
  • Try creating/editing the Etsy listing on desktop (or in a mobile browser) if the app is being extra pushy or buggy about the category flow—sometimes the web listing form makes it easier to switch categories/attributes without getting stuck in a weird branch.

One important tip: don’t choose a sub-style that’s plainly wrong (even if it lets you continue), because mismatched categories/attributes can confuse shoppers and hurt Etsy SEO/conversion. If you tell me what your dangles look like (hook vs stud top, length, materials, any theme), I can suggest the cleanest category path to use.
