Why did Etsy change my manual renew listings to auto-renew?

I run an Etsy shop and I keep all of my listings set to manual renewal so I can control when they renew. Today I noticed that listings I’m sure were manual are now set to auto-renew.

What could cause Etsy to switch listings from manual renew to auto-renew, and what’s the best way to change them back (and prevent it from happening again)?

Hi! The most common reason this happens is that Etsy’s default for new (and often duplicated/re-listed) Etsy listings is automatic renewal, and it’s easy to flip a bunch to auto-renew without realizing it when you renew/edit in bulk or renew an expired listing and leave the “renew automatically” box/settings turned on.

A few things that can cause “manual” listings to end up on auto-renew:

  • Creating a new listing or copying an old one: New listings default to auto-renew, so a copy of a manual listing can come in as auto unless you switch it back before publishing.
  • Bulk actions in Shop Manager: If you select multiple listings and use Editing options → Change renewal options, it’s possible to set a whole batch to auto-renew in one click (sometimes accidentally).
  • Renewing an expired listing (or several) and confirming auto-renew: When you renew, Etsy can present an option to have those renew automatically going forward—if that’s enabled during the renewal flow, the listing can end up set to auto.
  • Using the Etsy Seller app vs desktop: The setting is still there, but it’s easier to miss while editing quickly on mobile.
  • Third‑party listing tools/integrations (rare, but real): If you use any external apps/services that have permission to manage listings, they can sometimes push updates that include renewal settings.

How to change them back (fast)

  1. Shop Manager → Listings
  2. Check the boxes next to the affected listings (you can do this in batches).
  3. Click Editing options
  4. Choose Change renewal options
  5. Select Manual

How to help prevent it from happening again

  • Double-check renewal options any time you: create a new listing, copy/duplicate a listing, or do a bulk edit.
  • Be careful during renewal prompts: When renewing expired listings, watch for any checkbox/setting that enables automatic renewal for those listings.
  • Review connected apps: In your Etsy account settings, look for any connected apps/services that can edit listings, and remove anything you don’t fully trust or no longer use.
  • Turn on expiration reminder emails: That way you can keep manual control without being surprised by expirations.

One quick note (because it trips a lot of sellers up): even with manual renewal, you may still see fees that look like “auto-renew sold” when you sell multiple quantities—those are tied to how Etsy charges listing fees per quantity sold, not necessarily that your “expires/renews” setting is set to auto.

If you tell me whether you noticed this after (1) copying listings, (2) renewing expired listings, (3) bulk editing, or (4) using a third-party tool, I can narrow down the most likely culprit.
