Why did my Etsy listings switch from manual renewal to auto-renew?

I run an Etsy shop where I normally keep all my listings set to manual renewal so I can control when they renew. Today I checked my listing expirations and noticed every listing is now set to auto-renew.

What could cause Etsy to change listing renewal settings across my shop, and how can I switch everything back to manual renewal and prevent it from happening again?

Hi! The usual reason this happens is that Etsy treats Automatic renewal as the default, and one action (often a bulk edit, renewing a listing, or publishing/copying listings) can accidentally apply “Automatic” to a bunch of listings at once. It’s also possible someone/something else made the change (a Shop Member, a connected listing tool/app, or a compromised login), but most of the time it’s an in-dashboard change that got applied more widely than intended.

To switch everything back to manual renewal (fastest way)

  1. Go to Shop Manager → Listings (on a desktop browser is easiest).
  2. Filter/sort so you can see which ones are set to auto-renew (or just do all Active listings).
  3. Click the checkbox at the top to select all on the page (and repeat per page if needed).
  4. Choose Editing options → Change renewal options → Manual and save.

What commonly causes the “everything flipped to auto-renew”

  • Bulk editing in Listings Manager: If you (or a helper) used Editing options → Change renewal options and chose Automatic, it’ll apply to every selected listing (and it’s easy to accidentally select all).
  • Renewing an expired/sold-out listing and checking a box: When renewing from the renewal prompt, there’s an option like “renew these listings automatically” that can change the listing’s renewal setting going forward.
  • Copying/creating listings: New listings are typically created with Automatic selected unless you change it before publishing, so a batch of new/copy listings can look like “everything changed.”
  • Third-party tools: Inventory/pricing/listing managers that connect to Etsy can update listing attributes in bulk (including renewal options), depending on what you ran recently.

How to prevent it from happening again

  • Check account access: If you have Shop Members, confirm who has permission to edit listings. If you don’t recognize the change, change your password and turn on two-factor authentication.
  • Review connected apps/tools: If you use any listing or inventory software, double-check what it’s allowed to edit and whether you ran a “sync” or bulk update around the time this happened.
  • Be careful during renew/copy: After you copy a listing or renew from a prompt, quickly confirm the Renewal options = Manual before moving on.
  • Do a quick monthly sweep: In Listings, periodically filter for anything set to automatic and flip it back in bulk—it takes a minute and catches surprises early.

If you tell me whether you recently (1) renewed a bunch of listings, (2) copied/created new listings in bulk, (3) used any external listing tool, or (4) have Shop Members, I can help you narrow down the most likely trigger.
