Do I need to sign and date Etsy customs forms for EU-to-US shipments?

I run an Etsy shop in the EU and most of my orders ship to the US. When I buy and print my shipping labels, the customs section includes a small field for a signature and date.

Is it actually required to hand-sign and date the customs declaration on EU-to-US packages, or is it usually accepted without a physical signature when the label is generated digitally? If a signature is required, what’s the best practical way to handle it when the signature box is very small and you ship frequently?

Hi! In most EU-to-US shipments where you’re buying postage online (including Etsy shipping labels), you usually don’t need to physically hand-sign and date the CN22/CN23 customs declaration—because the customs data is transmitted electronically and the declaration is effectively “signed” as part of the digital label/transaction. That said, some postal operators and counter clerks still expect a visible signature/name on the printed customs declaration, so the safest approach is: if your printed label already shows your name (or an electronic/typed signature) in that signature area, you’re generally fine; if it’s blank, add something small by hand to avoid acceptance delays.

If you want a practical “do this every time” workflow (especially when you ship a lot):

  • If the signature box is blank: use initials + today’s date (e.g., “AB 01/04/2026”). Customs isn’t grading handwriting—legibility matters more than a fancy signature.
  • Use a small signature stamp for your name/initials, then handwrite just the date next to it. (A date stamp can work too if it fits and prints clearly.)
  • Don’t try to cram a full cursive signature into a tiny field—your printed name or initials is typically enough in practice, as long as the declaration is complete and truthful.

One quick tip: the “right” answer can vary by your country’s postal operator and whether you drop off at a post office counter vs. a business pickup/parcel shop. If you’ve never had a package refused at acceptance without a handwritten signature, you’re probably already operating in the “digital is accepted” lane. If you have had clerk pushback, the initials + date method is the fastest low-friction fix.
