Why is my Etsy available for deposit less than my order total?

Anonymous • in 3 hours • 1 answer

I’m a new Etsy seller and I recently had my first sale. After Etsy fees and taxes, my order shows a net amount in my shop finances, but the amount marked “available for deposit” is much lower even though it’s been about two weeks.

What are the most common reasons Etsy holds back part of a payment (like a reserve, refund window, shipping/label costs, or verification issues), and where in Etsy Payments can I see exactly what’s being withheld and when it will be released?

Hi! This is super common with a first Etsy sale—your “net” order amount is what you earned after Etsy fees/taxes for that order, but “available for deposit” can be much lower if Etsy is still in the initial new-seller availability window, you have a Payment account reserve, or something (like labels, Ads, refunds, or a verification/security hold) is being deducted/held in your Payment account.

Here are the most common reasons Etsy holds back part of a payment (especially for new shops):

  • New seller availability timing (very common): For new sellers, funds often don’t become “Available for deposit” immediately—even if the order is completed—because Etsy may delay availability (often around the 14–20 day range, and sometimes longer depending on shop standing).
  • Payment account reserve (rolling hold): Etsy may place a reserve on new shops (or higher-risk situations) where a percentage of each sale is held until you ship with trackable proof (when Etsy can confirm it’s in transit) or until the reserve’s holding period expires (often up to 45 days, shown in your reserve details).
  • Shipping label or other Etsy service charges: If you bought an Etsy shipping label, ran Etsy Ads, or had other charges, those come out of your Payment account and reduce what’s available to deposit.
  • Refunds / cases / chargebacks: Any refunds (or amounts set aside/adjusted related to disputes) can reduce your available funds.
  • Negative/low Payment account balance: If your fees and charges outweigh your sales funds at the moment, you can have a low (or zero) amount available for deposit even though a single order shows a positive “net.”
  • Bank / identity verification or security hold: If Etsy needs you to confirm seller info, verify your bank, or you recently changed bank details, there can be a security hold (commonly a short multi-day hold after bank detail updates) before funds can be deposited.
  • Deposit schedule / minimums: If your deposit schedule is weekly/biweekly/monthly, you may simply be waiting for the next deposit date. (Also, in some locations there are deposit minimums for daily deposits.)

Where to see exactly what’s being withheld and when it’ll be released (this is the part most new sellers miss):

1) Check for a Reserve (this will tell you what percent is held + the release timing)

  • Shop Manager → FinancesPayment account
  • Look for a “Payment account reserve” section.
    • If you have a reserve, it usually shows the percentage being reserved, the minimum reserve amount, and the holding period.
    • It can also show how/when funds get released (often faster when valid tracking shows “in transit”).

2) Review the line-by-line ledger so you can see what reduced your “available” amount

  • Shop Manager → FinancesPayment account → scroll to Recent activities
    • This is where you’ll see debits like shipping labels, Etsy Ads charges, listing/transaction fees, refunds, etc.

3) Identify which specific orders are in reserve

  • Go to Orders & Shipping
    • Etsy may label orders with something like an “in reserve” indicator/badge when funds from that order are being held.

4) Get the clearest “when will it be released” view (Availability Date)

  • Shop Manager → FinancesMonthly statements
    • Generate/download the statement (CSV). This typically includes a Status (e.g., in reserve) and an Availability Date for the held portion, which is the most straightforward “when does this unlock?” view.

5) Double-check deposit settings

  • Shop Manager → FinancesPayment settings
    • Confirm your deposit schedule (daily/weekly/biweekly/monthly) and make sure your bank details are fully set up and verified.

If you want, paste (not screenshots with personal info—just the wording) what you see in Payment account around “Reserve” and the top totals (“Current balance” / “Available for deposit” / “Not available yet”), and I can tell you which bucket it’s falling into and what usually unlocks it fastest.
