Why is my Etsy discount code showing in euros when my shop is USD?

Anonymous • tomorrow • 1 answer

I run an Etsy shop priced in USD and recently started sending discount codes to repeat customers. After sending a few codes, I tested one myself and noticed the discount appears in euros instead of USD.

What could cause a discount code to display in a different currency, and how can I make sure customers see the discount in USD?

Hi! This usually happens because Etsy shows prices (and coupon values) in the shopper’s selected currency, not strictly your shop’s base currency. So even if your Etsy shop currency is USD, if your account/browser (or the customer’s) is set to view Etsy in EUR, Etsy will display the discount as € after it converts it.

A few common causes:

  • Your browsing currency is set to EUR (sometimes from a past visit, travel/VPN, or browser location settings). Etsy then shows item prices and the coupon value in euros when you test it.
  • The customer is shopping in a non-USD currency (Etsy lets buyers view prices in their preferred currency). Discounts will appear in that same currency.
  • Fixed-amount coupons get converted (e.g., “$10 off” may display as “€X off” for someone viewing in EUR). Percentage-off coupons don’t have this issue since “10% off” is currency-neutral.

How to make sure customers see the discount in USD (as much as Etsy allows):

  1. Double-check your shop currency is USD: Shop Manager → Finances/Payment settings (where Etsy shows your shop’s currency). If it’s USD there, you’re fine.
  2. Test the code while viewing Etsy in USD: open an incognito/private window, make sure you’re not on a VPN, and switch the site currency to USD before testing (Etsy’s currency switcher is usually at the bottom of the page/region settings depending on device).
  3. Use percentage discount codes for repeat customers (best practice): this avoids confusion because the discount displays consistently for everyone (“15% off” is always “15% off”).
  4. If you prefer fixed-amount discounts, clarify in your message: “$10 off (discount converts automatically based on your Etsy currency).” Some customers will still see € (or another currency) and that’s normal on Etsy.

If you tell me whether your coupon is a fixed amount (like $5 off) or a percentage (like 10% off), I can suggest the cleanest setup for your exact promo.
