Do I need to sign and date Etsy customs forms for EU-to-US shipments?

I run an Etsy shop in the EU and most of my orders ship to customers in the US. When I print my shipping labels, the customs section includes a small field for a signature and date, and I’m not sure whether that’s actually required for the package to clear.

Is it necessary to physically sign and date the printed customs form for EU-to-US shipments, or is the electronic submission enough when buying labels through my carrier?

Hi! In most cases, if you’re buying postage through your carrier’s online system (or an Etsy-integrated label service) and the customs data is being sent electronically (EAD), you don’t need to physically hand-sign and date the CN22/CN23 for EU-to-US shipments—the “signature” line is basically a leftover from the paper form world, and the electronic submission is what customs actually relies on.

That said, here’s the practical, low-risk way to handle it for your Etsy orders:

  • If the customs declaration is printed as part of the label and already shows your name (typed) and the label date: you can usually leave it as-is.
  • If the printed customs form has an empty signature/date box (truly blank): it’s smart to write your name and the date. It won’t hurt anything, and it can prevent a picky acceptance scan clerk or intermediary postal operator from flagging it as “incomplete.”
  • If your carrier produces a separate CN22/CN23 page/document: make sure that document is attached to the outside of the parcel as instructed (some services still expect the paper to be present even when the data is transmitted electronically).

If you tell me which country/carrier you’re using (e.g., Deutsche Post, La Poste, PostNL, Correos, etc.) and whether your Etsy shipping label includes CN22/CN23 on the same page, I can give you the most specific “do this / don’t do this” answer for that setup.
