I sell items where buyers can optionally add custom text (personalization), and I’m trying to set it up as a paid add-on.
When I add a price to the variation option for the custom text, it seems to change the main listing price instead of acting like an additional charge. I want the base product to have one set price, and then let customers choose “no text” or “add text” for a few dollars more.
What’s the correct way to set up an optional paid personalization so the listing shows a base price but charges extra only when the buyer selects the text option?

So the correct setup is to make your “Add text” option have a higher total price than “No text,” and Etsy will charge more only when the buyer selects that option (but Etsy may display the lowest price or a price range in some places).
Here’s the cleanest way to do it in one Etsy listing:
Turn on a variation (Shop Manager → Listings → edit listing → Variations → Add variation or Create your own)
Enable “Prices vary for each variation” (the pricing toggle for variations)
