How do I help Etsy digital download buyers who can’t find their files (guest checkout)?

I sell digital downloads on Etsy, and I keep getting messages from customers saying they never received an email with their files. In many cases, it looks like they checked out as a guest, so they don’t know where to access the download.

Right now, I reply with a saved message linking to Etsy’s download instructions, but it still creates confusion and makes the purchase feel unreliable. What’s the best way to reduce these “I didn’t get the email” messages and help guest buyers access their digital files more smoothly?

Hi! The biggest shift is to stop framing it as “you’ll get an email with files” (because that email often gets filtered or the buyer used a different checkout email) and instead train buyers—before and after purchase—exactly where the download link lives for guest checkout: it’s in their Etsy receipt email, and downloads work best from a web browser (not the Etsy app).

Here are the most effective ways to reduce those “I didn’t get the email” messages:

1) Add a super-obvious “How to download” image to every Etsy listing
Put it in photo slot #2 or #3 so it’s seen on mobile. Keep it short, big text:

  • “Instant Digital Download (no physical item)”
  • “Checked out as a guest? Your download link is in your Etsy receipt email”
  • “Using the Etsy app? Switch to Safari/Chrome on a phone or use a computer”

That one image alone cuts confusion a lot because many buyers never read descriptions.

2) Update your “Message to buyers” (post-purchase) to include the guest steps
This shows on the order confirmation screen and in their receipt. Use plain steps and call out the two common issues: spam/junk and wrong email (especially PayPal/Apple Pay email).

3) Include a tiny “READ FIRST – How to Download” PDF as one of the files
Make the first file name something like: “READ FIRST - Download Instructions.pdf”.
Even if they only manage to download one file at first, that PDF tells them how to get the rest from the Etsy receipt page.

4) Make your saved reply do quick triage (guest vs. account + app vs. browser)
Instead of linking Etsy help and hoping they figure out which section applies, ask one simple question and give two paths. Here’s a template you can paste:

“Thanks for reaching out! Quick check: did you check out as a guest (no Etsy account), or while signed in?

  • If you checked out as a guest: Etsy puts your download link in the receipt email (subject usually includes your order/receipt). Please check Spam/Junk/Promotions and search your inbox for ‘Etsy receipt’. Also note: if you paid with PayPal/Apple Pay, the receipt may go to the email on that payment account.
  • If you were signed in: On a computer or phone web browser (Safari/Chrome) (not the Etsy app), go to Etsy → Your account → Purchases & Reviews → find this order → Download files.

If you tell me whether you used guest checkout and what device you’re on (phone/computer), I’ll point you to the exact spot.”

5) Set expectations clearly (without sounding harsh)
In your listing description (top 2–3 lines), add:

  • “Digital download only — nothing will be shipped.”
  • “Etsy doesn’t always allow downloading inside the Etsy app; use a browser.”
  • “Guest checkout downloads are accessed from the Etsy receipt email.”

If you want, paste your current saved message here (and tell me whether your buyers are mostly on iPhone/Android), and I’ll rewrite it to be shorter and more “followable” for guest checkout buyers.
