How do I mark an Etsy order as shipped after I forgot to complete it?

I run an Etsy shop where most orders are fulfilled through a print-on-demand service, but I occasionally ship a low-volume item myself.

I mailed an order on time and the customer has already received it, but I forgot to mark it as shipped in Etsy and it now shows as overdue. Is there a way to mark the order as shipped with the correct ship date (or otherwise prevent it from negatively affecting my shop stats)?

Hi! Yes—you can (and should) still complete the order now, but Etsy doesn’t really let you “backdate” it to the original ship date. Once an order is past its ship-by date, marking it as shipped will clear the overdue status for the customer/order going forward, but it may still count as shipped late for things like Star Seller / on-time shipping stats for that review period.

What to do now (quickest + safest):

  • Go to Shop Manager → Orders (New/Overdue), click Complete order.
  • If you have it, enter the tracking number and select the correct carrier. Even if it’s already delivered, having tracking on the order is still helpful for records and protection.
  • Add a short note to the buyer like: “Forgot to mark this as shipped in Etsy—glad it arrived!” (Optional, but it prevents confusion when Etsy sends the shipping notification.)

About the “ship date”:

  • Etsy’s “Ship date” picker is meant for when you hand it to the carrier, and it generally doesn’t allow setting a date far in the past (it’s mainly for “now” or a very short window ahead). So you usually can’t set the original ship date to fix the metric retroactively.

Will it hurt your shop stats?

  • If you’re looking at Star Seller / on-time shipping, this order may still be treated as late because it was completed after the ship-by date. Adding tracking won’t always “undo” that, but it’s still worth adding because it documents that it did ship and was delivered.
  • If you shipped on time and have tracking showing acceptance/delivery, keep that for your records in case anything ever comes up.

For next time (so this doesn’t happen again):

  • If you can, buy the label through Etsy (it auto-completes the order), or make sure your print-on-demand integration is set to automatically mark orders complete when they ship.
  • For the few you ship yourself, a quick daily check of the Orders → New tab (or a phone reminder) helps a lot.
