How do I run an Etsy sale that shows a discounted price and also requires a coupon code?

I’m trying to run a promotion in my Etsy shop where buyers see the original price crossed out and a discounted sale price on the listing, but the discount is still applied using a coupon code at checkout.

Right now, if I create a coupon code, the listing doesn’t visually show as “on sale.” If I set up a sale/discount event, it seems like I can only run it as an automatic sale without requiring a code. How can I set up a promo that shows the sale price on the listing while also using a code, or is that not possible on Etsy?

Hi! On Etsy, you can’t set up a promotion that shows the crossed‑out “sale” price on the listing and requires buyers to enter a shop coupon code to get that same discount—the strikethrough “On sale” display only happens with an Etsy Sale/Discount event, and those discounts apply automatically (no code required).

What you can do instead (depending on your goal):

  • If you want the visual sale look (strikethrough price): run a Sale. Then, if you still want a “code” element for tracking or exclusivity, use the code for something else (for example, a different incentive like free shipping or a smaller bonus discount), and message it to your audience. Just be aware Etsy generally won’t stack multiple %‑off discounts—the system usually applies the best eligible discount at checkout.
  • If you want the discount to require a code: use a Promo code (coupon). Your listing typically won’t show the same “on sale” strikethrough treatment, because the discount is applied at checkout when the shopper enters the code.

If you tell me what you’re trying to accomplish (e.g., “I want only Instagram followers to get the deal” vs “I want the sale badge for conversion”), I can suggest the cleanest setup in Etsy Sales & Discounts that matches that goal.
