How should I format an Etsy shipping address for South Korea with Canada Post?

I’m shipping a physical Etsy order from Canada to South Korea, and I’m buying the label through Canada Post/Etsy. The shipping tools won’t accept Korean characters, so I can only print the address in English/French.

For the handwritten address on the parcel, is it acceptable to write the recipient’s address in a romanized (English-letter) format, or should I also include the Korean address somewhere on the package? If I add Korean text, is it safe to use Google Translate for the address, or should I ask the buyer to provide the address in Korean (copy/paste)?

Hi! Yes—it's generally acceptable to ship to South Korea using a romanized (English-letter) address only, and that’s often required for postage systems like Canada Post/Etsy labels. That said, it’s even better (and can prevent delivery delays) to also include the Korean (Hangul) address somewhere on the package if you can.

If you can add Korean text, do this:

  • Keep the Canada Post/Etsy label exactly as-is (roman letters).
  • Add a second small label or a neat handwritten block in Hangul (off to the side of the main label, not covering barcodes).
  • Also slip a copy of the address inside the parcel (especially helpful if the outer label gets scuffed).

On the “Google Translate vs. buyer copy/paste” question: don’t translate their address yourself. Korean addresses are very easy to garble if you guess/convert them (and one wrong character can matter). The safest option is to ask the buyer to send their address in Korean (Hangul) exactly as used for local deliveries, so you can copy/paste it onto your extra label/handwriting.

A simple, safe layout for the romanized address on the shipping label is usually:

  1. Recipient name
  2. Unit/Room + building (if applicable)
  3. Street address (road name + building number), District (Gu)
  4. City/Province + 5-digit postal code
  5. REP. OF KOREA (or SOUTH KOREA) as the last line

If the buyer already entered their address in English letters on Etsy, you can use that for the label—but still request the Hangul version to add alongside it for smoother last-mile delivery in Korea.
