Should I start a new Etsy shop or reuse an old inactive account?

I’m reopening an Etsy shop that I originally used about 10 years ago, and it only has a couple of past sales. I’ve added new listings recently, but I’m not seeing any traction yet.

Could the long period of inactivity or the shop’s limited sales history be hurting my visibility, or is it better to keep the older shop because its age and history might help? Should I consider starting a brand-new Etsy shop instead?

Hi! In most cases you’re better off reusing the old Etsy shop—10 years of inactivity and only a couple sales generally won’t “penalize” you in Etsy search, and starting a brand-new shop won’t magically unlock visibility either. What usually drives traction is how strong each Etsy listing is (keywords, photos, price, shipping, conversion), plus how shoppers respond once they see it—not the shop’s age.

That said, there are a few reasons you might start fresh:

  • The old shop name/branding doesn’t match what you sell now (confusing to buyers).
  • You have old policies, sections, or “sold” items that clash with your current niche and you can’t clean it up well.
  • You want a clean break because the old shop has poor reviews (doesn’t sound like your case).

If none of those apply, I’d keep the existing shop and treat it like a relaunch.

Here’s what usually helps an “I’m back but getting no traction” Etsy situation more than switching shops:

  • Tighten your niche (Etsy tends to reward clarity—who it’s for, what it is, why yours).
  • Refresh Etsy SEO per listing: use specific long-tail phrases in titles and tags (not just single broad words), and make sure the first words of your title match what people actually search.
  • Upgrade the first photo (this affects clicks a lot). Aim for instantly clear: product + scale + best angle.
  • Make shipping feel easy: competitive shipping cost, realistic processing time, and clear delivery expectations.
  • Build momentum signals: add a small batch of strong listings (not just 1–2), and improve conversion (description clarity, variations, size charts, FAQs, etc.). Etsy doesn’t push listings that get views but no clicks/favorites/carts/sales.

If you want, paste one of your listing titles + the first 2–3 tags (and what the item is), and I’ll tell you whether the issue looks more like SEO (not being found) or conversion (being found but not clicked/bought).
