Why can’t I select “dangle earrings” as the Etsy category in the app?

I’m listing handmade earrings on Etsy using the mobile app. When I choose the “dangle earrings” option, Etsy forces me into narrower subcategories that don’t fit my design, and I can’t leave the category as just “dangle earrings.”

Is this a limitation of the Etsy app or the current category tree, and what’s the best workaround to categorize the listing correctly (for example, using the desktop site or adjusting attributes)?

Hi! That’s not really an “Etsy app limitation” so much as Etsy’s current category tree: Etsy often won’t let you stop at a broad category like “dangle earrings,” because it wants listings placed in a more specific “leaf” category (and the app tends to push you down whatever sub-branches Etsy thinks are most relevant).

A few good workarounds that usually solve it:

  • Try a different path to “Dangle & Drop Earrings” (don’t tap the first suggested route). In the category picker, use search and/or “select a different category” and see if there’s a Dangle & Drop Earrings option that doesn’t immediately force you into niche types. Sometimes one branch is overly specific while another route lands you in a more general leaf.
  • Use the desktop site to set the category (then fine-tune in the app). Desktop sometimes makes it easier to find the “least-wrong” leaf category and see alternative category paths. After you publish, you can still edit the Etsy listing from the app.
  • If Etsy forces you into a too-narrow subcategory, pick the closest match and fix the targeting with attributes + SEO. On Etsy, attributes are heavily tied to the category, and they help Etsy understand what your item is. Fill out the relevant ones (style, materials, color, closure, etc.) as accurately as possible, then back it up with:
    • a clear title phrase like “dangle earrings” / “drop earrings”
    • strong tags (e.g., “dangle earrings,” “drop earrings,” “statement earrings,” “minimalist earrings,” your materials, your closure type)

If you tell me what subcategories it’s forcing you into (the exact names you’re seeing), I can suggest the best “closest” category to choose and which attributes/tags will best compensate so you still show up in Etsy search for the right buyers.
