Why can’t I select “dangle earrings” as the Etsy category in the app?

I’m listing handmade earrings on Etsy using the mobile app. When I choose the “dangle earrings” option, it forces me into a couple of subcategories that don’t fit my design, and I can’t leave it at just “dangle earrings.”

Is this a limitation of Etsy’s category structure or a mobile app glitch, and what’s the best workaround (like choosing a different category or editing the category on desktop)?

Hi! That’s usually not you doing anything wrong—it’s a quirk of Etsy’s category tree in the mobile app. In some areas of the app, “Dangle earrings / Dangle & drop earrings” is treated like a parent category that requires a more specific child category, so it won’t let you leave it at just “dangle earrings.” In other words: it’s mostly Etsy’s category structure (and the app’s UI), not your listing.

What to do instead (best workarounds)

  • Use a desktop (or your phone browser, not the app) to set the category: On Etsy.com (Shop Manager), you can usually search/select the category path more cleanly, and it often avoids the weird forced subcategory choices.
  • Pick a slightly broader category, then rely on attributes: If Etsy keeps forcing subcategories that don’t match (like very specific style types), choose something like Jewelry → Earrings (or another “Earrings” branch that doesn’t force those options), then set the attributes (style = dangle/drop, materials, closure type, occasion, etc.). Etsy search uses attributes heavily, so you’re not “losing SEO” as much as it feels.
  • Copy/duplicate a listing that already has the right category: If you have (or can create on desktop) one listing with the correct category setup, duplicating it in the app often keeps the category/attributes structure so you don’t have to fight the picker again.

A quick tip: don’t use “category” to replace your own organization. If you want shoppers to browse “Dangle Earrings” in your shop, set up a Shop Section called “Dangle Earrings” and put the listings there—sections are independent from Etsy’s required category tree.
