Why did all my Etsy listings switch from manual renewal to auto-renew?

I run an Etsy shop with listings that I’ve always kept on manual renewal so I can control when they renew and charge fees. Today I checked my listing expirations and noticed that every active listing is now set to auto-renew instead.

What could cause all of my Etsy listings to switch to auto-renew, and how can I change them back and prevent it from happening again?

Hi! The most common reasons all Etsy listings suddenly flip from manual renewal to auto-renew are (1) a bulk action you (or someone with shop access) did in Listing Manager, (2) a third‑party listing tool/integration that “syncs” settings back to Etsy, or (3) Etsy updating/renewing a batch of listings (sometimes after a listing edit/renewal flow) in a way that applies the “recommended” auto‑renew setting more broadly than you expected.

A few specific things that often trigger it:

  • Bulk editing or renewing multiple listings in one session: some sellers notice that after certain bulk actions, listings end up saved as auto-renew.
  • Copying listings: depending on the flow you used, copied listings can come out set to auto‑renew, and if you did a lot of copies it can look like “everything changed.”
  • Connected apps/services (listing editors, bulk editors, inventory sync, print-on-demand listing push tools): these can overwrite listing details—including renewal options—when they sync.
  • Shared login / staff access: anyone who can edit listings can also change renewal options (sometimes without realizing it).

How to change them back to manual (fastest way)

  1. Go to Shop Manager → Listings.
  2. Select the listings (use the checkbox at the top to select all on the page; repeat per page if needed).
  3. Choose Editing options (bulk edit).
  4. Find Renewal options and set them to Manual.
  5. Save.

Also spot-check a couple listings by opening one listing → scrolling to the Renewal options area → confirm it shows Manual.

Important “gotcha” so you’re not surprised by fees

Even if a listing is set to manual, Etsy can still charge a renewal fee when an item sells in a way that requires the listing to stay available (for example, multi‑quantity listings renewing as quantity sells down). Manual renewal mainly controls what happens when the listing expires (the 4‑month listing period), not every scenario related to keeping stock available.

How to prevent it from happening again

  • Review/remove third‑party access: In your Etsy account settings, check any connected apps/services and disconnect anything you don’t actively use (or any tool that “pushes/syncs” listings).
  • Limit who can edit listings: If anyone else helps in your shop, confirm they didn’t bulk edit renewal options by accident.
  • Be careful with bulk actions: If you’re doing bulk edits/renewals, re-check the renewal setting right after (filter a few listings and confirm they stayed Manual).
  • Do a quick weekly audit: In Listings, filter/sort and spot-check renewal options so you catch it before a big batch renews.

If you tell me whether you use any integrations (Printful/Printify, Listy/“bulk editor” apps, inventory sync tools, etc.) and whether you recently bulk edited or copied listings, I can help you narrow down the most likely cause in your case.
