Why won’t my Etsy shipping label print correctly for an international order (India)?

I sell physical products on Etsy and I’m trying to buy and print a shipping label for an order going to India. The label purchase/print process isn’t working the way it normally does, even after I corrected the address formatting.

What typically causes Etsy shipping labels to fail or generate incorrectly for international shipments, and is it better to purchase postage at the post office instead? If I buy shipping outside of Etsy, can I be reimbursed through Etsy, or do I just enter the tracking information manually?

Hi! For India orders, Etsy shipping labels usually fail or look “wrong” for a few predictable reasons: (1) the service you’re trying to use isn’t available for that destination from your country/account (or Etsy routes it through a different program like Global Postal, which generates a different style label), (2) something on the customs side is incomplete/invalid (item description too vague, missing value/weight, country of origin, tariff/HS code when prompted, etc.), or (3) it’s actually generating fine but it prints incorrectly because international labels often include customs info and don’t behave like a simple 4×6 label—especially if you’re printing on a thermal label printer or your print settings are scaling/cropping.

A few common “gotchas” to check before you give up on Etsy labels:

  • Label format mismatch (big one): Etsy’s 4×6 formatting is not universal for every carrier/service. If your India shipment is producing a letter-size PDF with customs info, a 4×6 printer will often print it tiny, cut it off, or rotate it weirdly unless you download the PDF and print with the right scaling/orientation (and sometimes you simply need to print on 8.5×11 instead).
  • Customs details triggering errors: Make sure each item has a clear description (not just “gift”/“product”), accurate quantity, weight, and value. If Etsy asks for tariff/HS code or country of origin, fill it in—some services/lanes get picky and will error out.
  • Address/phone formatting: India shipments can be sensitive to PIN code/state/city placement, and some carriers require a recipient phone number. Even if the address “looks” fine, a missing field can cause label purchase issues.
  • Browser/extensions/cache: Ad blockers, script blockers, or some print/PDF extensions can break Etsy’s label flow. Trying an incognito/private window or a different browser often fixes “it won’t generate/download” problems.

Is it better to buy postage at the post office (or elsewhere)?
It can be, yes—especially for tricky international destinations or if you need a specific service (or better tracking/insurance options) than what Etsy is offering for that order. Buying elsewhere is totally normal for international shipping.

If you buy shipping outside of Etsy, can Etsy reimburse you?
Not really. Etsy doesn’t “reimburse” you for postage you buy off Etsy as a separate payout. You just pay for that shipping yourself (as a business expense). What you can do is:

  • Complete the order without buying an Etsy label, then enter the tracking number manually in the order (choose the carrier if it’s listed, or choose “Other” if it isn’t). The buyer will still get shipping notifications, and the order will show as shipped.
  • If you already bought an Etsy label that you won’t use, request a label refund (as long as it hasn’t been used/accepted by the carrier).

If you tell me what you mean by “isn’t working” (error message vs. label downloads but prints wrong vs. dimensions/prices won’t load) and what printer you’re using (regular printer or 4×6 thermal), I can point you to the fastest fix for that specific symptom.
