Did Etsy remove the $0.78 USPS letter shipping option for tracked envelopes?

I sell small, lightweight items that fit in an envelope, and I’ve been buying Etsy shipping labels using the USPS letter/flat option that shows tracking and costs under $1.

When I went to buy a label in the Etsy app today, the cheapest option showing is around $4+ (like Ground Advantage), and I can’t find the lower-cost letter option anymore.

Did Etsy change or remove the tracked letter shipping label option, or is there a setting or package type I need to select to make it appear?

Hi! Etsy hasn’t broadly removed the under-$1 “Letter/Flat” (tracked envelope) label—when it suddenly disappears and you only see $4+ options, it’s usually either (1) the Etsy app not showing the Letter/Flat package type correctly, or (2) the package details you entered making it ineligible so Etsy only offers parcel services like Ground Advantage.

A few quick things to check (these are the usual culprits):

  • Try on desktop (or mobile browser) instead of the app: A lot of sellers are seeing the Letter option missing in the Etsy app while it still shows up on a computer / browser. If you can, open Etsy in a browser, go to Orders, then Get shipping labels, and look for Package type = Letter or Flat.
  • Make sure you’re selecting the right “Package type”: If Etsy defaults you to Package/Thick envelope/Custom, you’ll only get parcel rates (the $4+ ones). You specifically need Letter (or Flat) for the cheap postage.
  • Double-check size/weight (even small differences can hide the option):
    • Letter must be ≤ 3.5 oz and ≤ 0.25 in thick
    • If your thickness is set to 0.3", or your weight is over the limit, Etsy will often remove the Letter/Flat rate and show only Ground Advantage.
    • If your item is rigid/lumpy (like metal, thick acrylic, etc.), it may not qualify as “machinable,” and Etsy may not offer Letter/Flat for that shipment.
  • Update the app / re-enter dimensions: If you want to keep using the app, try updating it, then re-typing the dimensions (especially thickness). Some sellers have gotten the option to reappear after adjusting thickness (as long as it’s still accurate).

One more heads-up: the “tracking” on Etsy Letter/Flat labels is Pitney Bowes tracking, not the same as normal USPS package tracking, so it can be spotty (sometimes it looks like “pre-transit” for a while even when it’s moving).

If you tell me your typical weight + envelope dimensions (L x W x thickness) and what the item is (paper-only vs rigid), I can tell you which package type (Letter vs Flat vs parcel) should make the cheap option appear.
