How do I add multiple personalization fields on an Etsy listing?

I’m setting up Etsy listings for custom commissions and I need buyers to provide more than one detail (for example, name text plus color or size).

Is there a way to add multiple separate personalization input boxes on a single Etsy listing, or do I need to handle extra fields another way?

Hi! As of right now, on a standard Etsy listing you generally only get one built-in personalization text box (not multiple separate input boxes), so if you need name + color + size you’ll want to collect the extra details using Variations and/or your personalization instructions.

The cleanest workaround for custom commissions is usually:

  • Use Variations for anything “selectable” (size, color, finish, quantity, add-ons). That keeps orders consistent and reduces back-and-forth.
  • Use the Personalization box for the “typed” part (like the exact name/text), and in the instructions tell them the exact format you want, e.g. “Name text: ___ / Font: ___ / Any notes: ___”.

If you’re already using both variation slots (or you need more than Etsy allows), common options are:

  • Put the overflow info into the single personalization box (and make it required), using a fill-in template.
  • Ask for the extra details via “Note to seller” or Etsy Messages (this works, but it’s easier for buyers to forget—so many sellers only use this as a backup).
  • Do a custom order/custom listing after they message you (best when every commission is truly unique and you don’t want incorrect submissions).

One extra tip: add a listing photo that literally shows “WHAT TO TYPE IN THE PERSONALIZATION BOX” with an example—buyers follow images more reliably than description text.

If you tell me what your required fields are (name, size, color, font, etc.), I can suggest the simplest split between Variations vs. the personalization box for that specific listing.
