How do I regain access to my Etsy account when 2FA is tied to an old phone number?

I’m an Etsy seller and I can’t log into my account after resetting my password because the login is still requiring two-factor authentication. The verification is being sent to a phone number I no longer have access to, and I also don’t have any backup/recovery codes saved.

I’ve tried contacting support, but I keep getting routed in circles between help pages and email prompts without a clear way to verify my identity. What’s the best way to update or remove 2FA and regain access to my Etsy seller account when I no longer have the old phone number or backup codes?

Hi! If you don’t have the old phone number and you don’t have your Etsy backup/recovery codes, there isn’t a self-serve way to remove or update 2FA from the login screen—at that point, only Etsy Support can reset 2-step verification for you. The fastest path is to submit the “can’t sign in / 2FA” support request (it’s separate from the general help articles), and in parallel try to recover the old number through your carrier if that’s at all possible.

Here’s what to do (in the order that usually works best):

  1. Check for any “already logged in” access (this can save you)
  • Try Etsy on any device/browser where you might still be signed in (old laptop browser profile, Etsy Seller app, tablet, etc.).
  • If you find you’re still logged in anywhere: go straight to your account security settings and turn off 2FA or switch it to an authenticator app, then add/verify your current phone number, then re-enable 2FA.
(Do this immediately before that session expires.)
  1. Try to reclaim the old phone number (even temporarily)
  • Contact your mobile carrier and ask if they can reassign/reactivate the old number (or move it to a new SIM) long enough to receive SMS/calls.
  • This is often the quickest “real-world” fix because it lets you pass the existing 2FA challenge without waiting on support.
  1. Submit the right Etsy Support request (avoid the “help page loop”)
When you’re locked out, you need the account access / can’t sign in / 2FA flow (not the general seller help email prompts).
  • Go to Etsy Help and choose options like: I can’t sign inTrouble with two-factor authentication → keep selecting I still need help until you reach the support request form/chat option.
  • Use a desktop browser in a private/incognito window if it keeps bouncing you around.
  • Don’t open a bunch of new tickets—one ticket + replying to that same email thread usually moves faster than duplicates.
  1. What to include so they can verify you (without sending sensitive info)
Etsy typically needs enough detail to confirm you’re the account owner. In your first message, include:
  • Your Etsy account email and your shop name (if you remember it)
  • A clear statement: “2FA is sending codes to a phone number I no longer have, and I don’t have backup codes.”
  • Any non-sensitive identifiers that help them locate the account (for example: approximate date you last logged in, country, and the last 2–4 digits of a payout/billing card only if Etsy specifically asks—don’t volunteer full numbers)

A few important “don’ts” (these prevent delays/flags)

  • Don’t buy or use sketchy “temporary/virtual numbers” to receive codes—those are unreliable and can create account security issues.
  • Don’t keep retrying codes over and over; too many attempts can trigger temporary blocks that slow everything down.
  • Don’t create a new Etsy account to “get around it” for selling—this can complicate verification and shop access.

If you tell me what you’re seeing on the screen (for example: SMS only vs call option, any “I still need help” link, or any error message), I can point you to the exact sequence of clicks/choices that usually reveals the correct support form for 2FA lockouts.
