Why can’t I select “dangle earrings” as the category on Etsy mobile?

I’m trying to create a new earring listing in the Etsy app, and when I choose “dangle earrings,” it forces me into subcategories that don’t fit my product. I can’t seem to leave the category at just “dangle earrings.”

Is this a limitation of the Etsy app or how Etsy’s categories are set up, and what’s the best way to categorize my earrings so the listing still shows up in the right searches?

Hi! What you’re seeing is mostly how Etsy’s category system is set up (and the mobile app can make it feel extra “forced”). Etsy wants listings placed in the most specific category so it can attach the right attributes/filters for search, so in some Jewelry paths it won’t let you stop at a higher level like “dangle earrings” and will push you into a narrower subcategory—even if it doesn’t perfectly match your design.

If the only subcategories offered truly don’t fit, the best approach is:

  • Pick the closest accurate category you can (don’t choose something misleading just to “get in” a path).
  • Then lean hard on Attributes + title + tags to get found: select the best options for things like style, material, color, occasion, recipient, closure/ear wire type, etc. Etsy search and filtered results rely heavily on those attributes.
  • Use your Etsy listing tags to capture the real intent (e.g., “dangle earrings,” “drop earrings,” “fishhook earrings,” “long earrings,” “boho earrings,” “minimalist dangle,” etc.), plus any material/stone keywords.

A practical workaround many sellers use: create or edit the listing in a desktop browser (or your phone’s browser in desktop mode) instead of the Etsy Seller app. Sometimes the app UI is stricter/buggier about category selection, and the web flow can be easier for backing out or choosing a better-fitting path. After publishing, you can also edit the category later if you find a better match.

If you tell me what your earrings are like (closure type, style, main material/stone, and vibe—minimalist/boho/goth/bridal, etc.), I can suggest the safest “closest category” path and the exact attributes/tags to cover the searches you want.
