Can I sell Etsy digital downloads and print-on-demand in one listing?

Anonymous • tomorrow • 1 answer

I sell digital download files on Etsy, and I’m considering adding a print-on-demand option for the same designs.

Is it possible to offer both the instant digital file and a POD physical version within a single Etsy listing (for example, as variations), or do they need to be separate listings? If it is allowed, what’s the correct way to set it up so the right delivery method, production time, and pricing apply to each option?

Hi! On Etsy, you can’t reliably combine an instant digital download and a physical print-on-demand (POD) product into a single listing as variations—because Etsy doesn’t support variations on digital listings, and a listing is meant to be either “digital” (download delivery) or “physical” (shipping/processing) with one checkout flow.

The clean (and Etsy-friendly) way is to make two separate listings for the same design:

  • Listing A (Digital download): set the listing type to Digital item and upload the files (instant download) or set it as made-to-order if you customize the file per buyer.
  • Listing B (Physical POD): set the listing type to Physical item, connect/fulfill via your POD workflow, and use the correct shipping profile + processing time for production.

If you try to force both into one listing, you’ll run into issues like: the wrong delivery method at checkout, mismatched processing/shipping expectations, and confusion if someone expects a file immediately but the listing is set up as a physical item (or vice versa).

If you want customers to easily choose between them, here’s a practical setup:

  • Use the same main photos/style and very clear first photo text like “DIGITAL DOWNLOAD” vs “PRINTED & SHIPPED”
  • In each listing description, add a short line like “Looking for the printed version? See my shop for the physical print listing” (and vice versa)
  • Keep titles/tags similar, but include distinguishing terms like digital download, printable vs printed, shipped, physical print

If you tell me what you’re selling (art print, invitations, shirts, etc.) and whether your digital is instant or personalized, I can suggest the simplest way to phrase the listings so buyers don’t pick the wrong one.
