How do I set Etsy listing quantity when a variation already lets buyers choose 1–5 items?

On Etsy you generally can’t remove the main quantity selector—Etsy treats it as “how many of the selected option (variation) do you want?” So if you offer a “5‑item bundle” variation, Etsy will still let someone order quantity 2 (which becomes 10 items). The only real way to stop that multiplication is to make sure the listing/variation inventory only allows “1” to be purchased at a time.

Here are the cleanest setups sellers use:

Option A (hard cap, no multiplying): set inventory to 1

• Make your variation name something like “Bundle size” (not “Quantity,” to reduce confusion).
• In Variations, turn on Prices vary (so each bundle has its own total price).
• Then set your inventory so the buyer can only buy 1:
  • Either set the main listing Quantity = 1 (and don’t vary quantity by variation), or
  • If you’re using “Quantities vary for each variation,” set the quantity for each bundle option to 1.
    Result: buyers can pick 1–5 in the dropdown, but they can’t also order 2x, 3x, etc.

The tradeoff: you’ll either get a “only 1 available”/low stock vibe, or you’ll need to renew/restock as orders come in. That’s just how Etsy inventory works.

Option B (you allow multiples, but control workload): stock it by what you can actually handle
If you’re okay with someone buying multiples sometimes, set each variation’s quantity to the maximum number of that bundle you can fulfill within your processing time. (Example: if you can only handle two “5‑item bundles” before you’re swamped, set that variation’s quantity to 2.) Buyers will still be able to increase quantity, but you’ve capped it to your real capacity.

If your real goal is “max 5 items total per order”
Etsy doesn’t have a built-in “max items per order” rule that will enforce that across variations + quantity. If you truly must enforce “5 max,” the only reliable way is Option A (inventory = 1) or splitting into separate Etsy listings (one listing per bundle size) and keeping each listing’s quantity at 1.
